Here I am heading south at last. First stop on the way is a couple of nights in Kolkata. Apart from the almost permanent traffic gridlock, I find it a much easier going city than Delhi. I won't have much time to explore and now I'm wishing I had a couple more days.
It's t fascinating city, with so many aspects and undercurrents it would take a long time to know the place. Sadly all I have time for are a couple of museums and the inside of the famous Kolkata yellow taxis.
The museum was like a relic from the Raj, with large dark galleries full of rows of glass cages containing mind boggling arrays of I know not what. A large room full of stuffed animals that should have been buried years ago and an impressive sculpture collection.
Afterwards it was onward to another relic from the Raj, the stupendous Victoria Monument building. A massive and indeed impressive edifice. It's gallery was packed with a fantastic collection depicting the city's history which I would have loved to study more closely, but it was busy, hot and I was knackered because Indian museums don't believe in providing benches for tired visitors.
As it was to be yet another 4am wakeup there was little else I could do other than freshen up have supper and an early night.
