I would have liked to declare that my time on Majuli was a travellers dream. Unfortunately it was far from it. Getting the most out of the island requires getting around. Usually on a bicycle which I thought I had reserved.
However the management at La Maison guest house were hugely lacking in organisational skills so I ended up without the bike. Thus I could only make short walks around the village. The other drawback was that the island is like one giant mosquito farm.
No doubt in future years it will be a bigger tourist destination. Until then, it will remain a slow underdeveloped backwater with next to no tourist infrastructure or support.
The broken bamboo bridge below kind of sums up the island - very pretty but just not functional. And if the mighty Brahmaputra has it's way in a few decades there is a good chance there will be Majuli no more.
