One of the delights and frustrations of my visit to Majuli is the accommodation. A basic bamboo hut on stilts, supposedly designed by a philanthropic French Architect to incorporate tourist needs into a traditional design. Quite frankly that is a load of bollocks and it is nothing more the a French hippy's ego trip.
The building itself is a plain copy of every local bamboo home to be seen everywhere hereabouts . Right down to the only source of water being a rusty old water pump embedded into a concrete floor along with a stinky hole in the floor toilet. So a concrete floor and a mouldy David Beckham poster from yester year are the only token touches towards a tourist friendly habitat.
The prettiness of the building is beyond doubt it's the main attraction and it's a delight to stay here but the bamboo structure with its gaping spaces built into the wall is an open dinner invitation to all the mosquitos from the breeding farm next door.
An additional stumble for me are the steps, carved out of a single narrow log. They are just wide enough for a sideways foot. Going up is fine but coming down might have been easier sliding down a bamboo pole.
