Haridwar

The Har-Ki-Pairi ghat is the centre piece of Haridwar. The footstep of God,  marking the exact point where the Ganges leaves the mountains and starts it's long meandering journey across the plains.

Every evening at dusk and I believe at dawn as well, thousands gather on the river banks to chant and launch little leaf boats holding lighted candles into the Ganges. It's  a pretty sight and was well worth attending.

Other than the ghats, I  didn't find much else on the surface to attract my attention. There is a temple on the hill dominating the town linked by a cable car. The best thing about it was the few minutes quietly gliding through the air on the way up and down.

Aside from that,  Haridwar is a pleasant hassle free place and the narrow alleyways of the bazaars are cool and shaded and always fascinating to stroll through. And if nothing else the amazing thick creamy cold sweet lassi from Prakash Lok deep in the bazaar makes the effort to find the place more than worth it.
